Can it see at night?
Yes. Both cameras use 940nm no-glow infrared night vision with a range of 65 to 90 feet.
No-glow means the camera makes no visible light when it takes a picture at night. People and animals do not see a flash.  lights the scene with 54 infrared LEDs and triggers in 0.4 seconds at night.  triggers in a quarter of a second. Night photos are black and white. How does it work without Wi-Fi? Is that reliable?
The cameras are cellular. They send photos over the same networks your phone uses. No Wi-Fi is required or offered.
Barn Owl cameras connect through AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and regional rural carriers. If a location has cell coverage, the camera can send photos from it. There is nothing to connect to your home internet, because the camera never uses it, and it does not use your personal phone plan. Photos and alerts arrive in the Barn Owl HQ app on your phone.
Reliability comes down to cell coverage at the camera site. That is a question you can answer before you spend anything. See the last section on coverage.
Will it survive winter?
Both cameras are rated for use down to minus 4°F and carry an IP66 waterproof rating.
RangeCam Live operates from minus 4°F to 140°F. RangeCam 2 operates from minus 4°F to 131°F. Rain, snow, dust, and heat are within the design range.
Two things deserve planning in cold climates. First, winter days are short, so a solar panel collects less charge. Mount the panel with clear southern exposure. Second, batteries drain faster in the cold. RangeCam 2 runs on eight AA batteries and accepts alkaline, NiMH, or lithium cells, so you can choose the chemistry that fits your winters. How often do I have to touch it?
Mount it once, then manage it from your phone.
The solar panel is included in the box with every camera bundle. It is not an optional accessory. With the panel mounted in decent sun, the camera charges itself. You change camera settings, check photos, and trigger new pictures from the app, not at the camera. What does it really cost per month?
Every camera requires a cellular service plan. Plans are $7, $15, or $25 per month. There are no contracts.
We publish this before you buy, because it is the most common question buyers have and some brands answer it quietly after checkout. The camera sends photos over cellular networks, and that data has a real cost, the same way a phone line does. Any cellular camera from any brand carries a service cost. The plans are:
- Basic, $7 per month. 300 standard photos.
- Standard, $15 per month. 2,200 standard or 900 HD photos, 330 videos, and 30 minutes of livestream.
- Unlimited, $25 per month. Unlimited photos, videos, and livestream minutes.
Annual billing is available and saves up to two months per year.
Will it work at my place?

The cameras use four major networks plus regional rural carriers, which covers most rural ground in the United States.
