The short answer
A solar panel plus an internal battery keeps a cellular camera running year-round with no site power at all. In some cases, the solar panel has its own internal battery that it constantly charges while pushing power to the camera. In other cases, the camera itself holds a rechargeable battery that is topped up by the solar panel. With a quality system and the correct positioning, a solar-powered camera can operate year-round, through inclement weather and cloudy days, and never need to be touched.
How the power budget works
A cellular camera spends most of its life asleep, waking for motion events, scheduled image capture, and check-ins. Each wake-up costs battery; the solar panel keeps the system running day and night. The balance depends on three things:
- Traffic. A camera on a busy gate wakes hundreds of times a day and needs more sun than one watching a quiet laydown yard.
- Sun hours. Winter days are short and low-angle. A panel that soaks up sun in July can fall behind in January if it is aimed wrong.
- Signal strength. Weak cellular signal makes every transmission cost more battery. Check the site on a coverage map first; a camera with good signal lasts noticeably longer than the same camera straining on one bar.
Placing the panel on a construction site
- Face the panel south (in the northern hemisphere) and tilt it steeply enough to catch winter sun and shed dust and snow.
- Mount it above splash and spray height. Concrete dust and mud film might cut output without you realizing. It’s easy to wipe the panel occasionally as needed. But with proper installation it likely won’t be an issue.
- Watch the crane and the building itself. A panel placed in March can be in full shadow by August when the structure goes up. Treat panel position as part of the site plan and move it as phases change.

Yes, on battery alone for shorter deployments. Both cameras also ship with an A/C adapter, so a location with reliable power can run on shore power instead.
